Strasbourg

La Petite France is the most picturesque quarter of old Strasbourg, with canals, quays and half-timbered houses lining the River Ill.

Fishermen, millers and tanners once lived and worked in this district. Rue du Bain-aux-Plantes has a particularly fine row of pale half-timbered houses, several with tall open lofts once used for drying hides.

Place Benjamin Zix overlooks the river and Maison des Tanneurs, while Ponts Couverts and Barrage Vauban reveal how the waterways also formed part of the city’s defences.

Grande Île surrounding the district is Strasbourg’s historic centre, bringing together the cathedral, public squares, La Petite France and many of the city’s most important streets in one compact urban landscape.

Notre-Dame Cathedral is Strasbourg’s defining landmark and one of Europe’s most impressive Gothic buildings.

The façade is carved from pink Vosges sandstone and reads like an intricate medieval story, with hundreds of sculptures and dramatic patterns of light and shadow.

Inside are stained-glass windows, an organ, an ornate pulpit and the famous astronomical clock. The cathedral’s soaring spire is visible across much of the city.

A long staircase leads to the viewing platform, with broad views across Strasbourg and the surrounding plain. Always check current access arrangements before visiting.

Palais Rohan is one of France’s finest 18th-century palaces, set between the cathedral and the River Ill.

The building was constructed between 1732 and 1742 as the residence of the prince-bishops of Rohan, to designs by Robert de Cotte, the king’s principal architect.

Today the palace houses museums of decorative arts, European painting and archaeology. Its historic apartments also offer a glimpse of court life and French Baroque style in Strasbourg.

It combines particularly well with the cathedral and the streets around Place du Château.

Parc de l’Orangerie is Strasbourg’s grand classic city park and a natural place to slow down after exploring the old town.

The park covers around 26 hectares and is known for landscaped spaces, mature trees, flowers, lawns and peaceful paths.

Its location beside the European Quarter makes it easy to combine the park with the European Parliament, the Council of Europe and Lieu d’Europe.

The park is well suited to walks, picnics and a quiet family break. Check seasonal facilities and activities locally.

The European Quarter reveals a very different side of Strasbourg from the medieval streets of Grande Île.

The European Parliament, Council of Europe and European Court of Human Rights stand here in a district shaped by modern architecture, broad public spaces and international activity.

Lieu d’Europe occupies a historic house and explores Europe’s history, its institutions and Strasbourg’s role as a European meeting place through exhibitions and events.

Combine the district with Parc de l’Orangerie or a bicycle ride beside the canals.

Strasbourg has held a Christmas market since 1570 and is regarded as one of Europe’s great Advent destinations.

The market began as Christkindelsmärik and has developed over the centuries into an extensive festive celebration across several squares on Grande Île.

Half-timbered houses, illuminated decorations, local crafts and Alsatian food traditions give the city a particularly strong identity during Advent.
