Sartène

Dark granite houses, cobbled lanes and enduring traditions – in a historic hill town overlooking Valinco and the wild coast of southern Corsica.

Sartène stands on a rocky ledge above the valleys of south-western Corsica. Its compact old town is a maze of tall granite houses, vaulted passageways, steps and narrow lanes shaped by trade, family feuds, religious devotion and changing political power.

The town is also a fine base for the menhirs of Cauria, the bay of Roccapina, Tizzano and the vineyards of the Sartenais. Its combination of hill-town atmosphere, archaeology, local flavours and coastline makes Sartène a natural stop on a tour of southern Corsica.

The old town and Petraghju

Sartène’s historic quarter clings to the rocky hillside, with tall granite façades, cobbles and vaulted passageways.

The old town is a dense network of steps, narrow lanes and imposing houses that at times served almost as private fortresses. Its architecture reflects powerful families and a history of conflict, religious influence and political struggle.

Around Place de la Libération, still called Place Porta by many residents, café life and everyday routines come together. From here, continue through the passage beneath the town hall into the Petraghju quarter.

Sartène is designated a Ville d’Art et d’Histoire. A slow walk is the best way to appreciate the interplay of granite, history and views across the Valinco landscape.

Wild coastal scenery

Roccapina and the Lion Rock

Between Sartène and Bonifacio lies one of Corsica’s most recognisable bays, watched over by a lion-shaped granite outcrop.

Roccapina combines pale sand, clear water, maquis and great formations of pink granite. The Lion de Roccapina was sculpted by wind and erosion and marks the southern gateway to Sartenais-Valinco.

Above the beach stand the remains of an early 17th-century Genoese watchtower. It can be reached on foot, but the terrain and fragile ruins require care.

The beach is reached along a minor road and the area can become busy in summer. Bring water, respect the landscape and follow local guidance on parking and fire risk.

Church and living tradition

Sainte-Marie and U Catenacciu

The church beside Place Porta is central to Sartène’s religious history and its most enduring traditions.

Église Santa Maria Assunta stands at the entrance to the old town and is closely associated with festivals and processions that remain deeply important in the Sartenais.

The best known is U Catenacciu on Good Friday. An anonymous penitent follows a traditional route through the town carrying a cross and chains, in a ceremony attended by residents and visitors alike.

The tradition is first and foremost an act of faith. Visitors should behave respectfully and consult official information when planning a trip around Holy Week.

Musée de Préhistoire et d’Archéologie

The museum brings together some of the most important finds from Corsica’s long prehistory and archaeological excavations.

The collections trace human settlement on the island from the earliest known periods, around 10,000 years ago, to the end of the Genoese era.

Objects from the Sartène region and elsewhere in Corsica illuminate everyday life, tools, weapons, jewellery and the development of island communities over several millennia.

The museum stands at the top of the old town beside the former prison and overlooks Valinco. It is a natural stop before or after visiting Cauria and other megalithic sites.

Megaliths and prehistory

The archaeological site of Cauria

Cauria is one of the most important places for understanding the megalithic culture of southern Corsica.

In open countryside south-west of Sartène, stone alignments, menhirs and a dolmen reveal how the landscape was used and marked in prehistoric times.

Southern Corsica has the island’s greatest concentration of menhirs. Cauria rewards an unhurried visit, with time to study the forms, their placement and the relationship between the monuments and the surrounding landscape.

The site pairs well with the museum in Sartène, where many objects from archaeological excavations across the region are displayed and explained.

Tizzano and Senetosa lighthouse

West of Sartène, a small fishing harbour opens onto a long protected coastline of granite, maquis and secluded bays.

Tizzano is a natural starting point for beach days and coastal walks. Towards Senetosa the landscape becomes wilder, with few buildings and broad views across the Mediterranean.

Senetosa lighthouse was built in 1857 on a rocky headland. It is linked to the coastal path and also provides simple accommodation for walkers.

The walk requires planning, sufficient water and careful attention to heat, wind and fire risk. Check access and any booking requirements before setting out.
