Saint-Malo

Saint-Malo rises like a great granite ship beside the English Channel, with a fortified old town, long beaches, a busy harbour, tidal islands and a maritime history that shapes the entire city.

Intra-Muros lies within formidable ramparts that offer panoramic views of Sillon Beach, Fort National, Grand Bé, Dinard and the boats sailing in and out of the harbour.

Beyond the walls are Saint-Servan, Solidor, Cité d’Alet, Rocabey, Paramé and Rothéneuf. Saint-Malo is also an excellent base for Cancale, Dinan, Dinard, Cap Fréhel and Mont-Saint-Michel.

The ramparts of Saint-Malo

The ramparts of Saint-Malo
Image from Frankrike.no.

The ramparts are the best introduction to Saint-Malo, connecting the sea, the city’s history, the beach and Intra-Muros.

The continuous circuit crosses gates, bastions and towers with views of the harbour and the English Channel.

From Tour Bidouane you can see Grand Bé and Petit Bé, while Bastion de la Hollande overlooks Bon-Secours and the seawater pool.

On the southern side stand tall granite houses built for the city’s wealthy shipowners and corsairs.

The circuit can be completed in around an hour, although photography stops and short detours make it easy to spend longer.

Walk early in the day or before sunset for quieter conditions and attractive light.

Tides · Forts, islands and safe access

Grand Bé, Petit Bé and Fort National

Tidal islands beyond Saint-Malo
Image from Frankrike.no.

The tide opens and closes the route to the islands beyond Saint-Malo, transforming the landscape from one hour to the next.

Fort National lies near Sillon and can be visited when access and opening hours allow.

Grand Bé is known as the burial place of the writer Chateaubriand and can be reached across sand and rocks at low tide.

Beyond Grand Bé lies Petit Bé, with a fortification that formed part of the city’s defences.

Access must be planned using local tide tables, not simply by how dry the route appears when you set out.

Return well in advance. Rising water can quickly cut off the route to the mainland.

Porte Saint-Vincent is the main entrance and leads directly towards the principal streets, cathedral and Place Chateaubriand.

Saint-Vincent Cathedral, the shipowners’ houses and the narrow streets tell stories of commerce, seafaring and the city’s strong sense of identity.

Large parts of the old town were destroyed in 1944 and later rebuilt with respect for its historic form and materials.

Behind the busiest streets are quieter lanes, small squares and passages that offer a more local experience.

Combine the streets at ground level with the ramparts to understand how the city is built between the harbour and beaches.
