Propriano

Propriano is a bright, lively harbour town combining a modern marina, local streets and traces of a much older history of settlement.

The town is sheltered by Scoglio Longo and faces the broad Golfe de Valinco. The area has been used through many historical periods, and evidence of both Greek and Roman presence has been found.

Modern Propriano developed around its harbour and maritime trade. Fishing boats, pleasure craft, restaurants and town life meet along the quays, while the older area around Tivolaggio lies higher on the hillside.

The marina is a natural starting point for a walk. Combine the harbour with the market, shopping streets and views towards the mountains surrounding the gulf.

Around Propriano, you will find everything from easily accessible town beaches to long stretches of sand and quieter coves in natural surroundings.

Mancinu is close to town and popular with families, while Lido provides easy access to the sea from several hotel areas.

Baracci lies at the head of the Gulf of Valinco and extends along a more open, natural setting. The beach offers plenty of space, clear water and a calmer atmosphere than the most central bathing spots.

For a longer outing, continue towards Campomoro, Porto-Pollo or Cupabia. Always check the wind, waves and local swimming conditions before entering the water.

Filitosa is one of Corsica’s most important prehistoric sites, an open-air museum with menhir statues, traces of settlement and monuments from several periods.

The site contains evidence of human activity from the sixth millennium BC through to the Roman period.

The best-known finds are the sculpted menhir statues and circular torre monuments. Together they make Filitosa one of the most significant sites for Corsican statuary.

The visit unfolds through an open landscape of stone, vegetation and archaeological structures. Allow plenty of time and check current visitor information before setting out.

Sartène occupies a dramatic hillside setting and is known for its dark granite houses, steep lanes and powerful sense of history.

The writer Prosper Mérimée described it as the most Corsican of all Corsican towns. Tall, solid façades give the old quarter the character of a fortress.

From Place Porta, you enter the older quarters of narrow passages, steps and stone houses. The town’s history is linked to powerful local families, conflict and deeply rooted religious traditions.

Sartène is a natural day trip from Propriano and can be combined with local producers, the coast or a longer journey south.

Bains de Baracci lies in the countryside near Olmeto, a short journey from Propriano, and is known for naturally warm, mineral-rich spring water.

The historic baths draw on sulphurous thermal water valued since antiquity. The complex was fully renovated in 2025.

A visit makes a peaceful break between beach days and excursions. Facilities may include pools, wellbeing areas and treatments, but availability and booking requirements should be checked in advance.

Consider combining the baths with Baracci beach, Olmeto or a relaxed lunch in the Valinco region.

Propriano’s covered market brings together local producers and offers an easy introduction to the ingredients and flavours of Valinco and the rest of Corsica.

Here you may find seasonal fruit and vegetables, local fish, cheese, cured meats, honey, olive oil and other Corsican specialities.

The market is a good place to start the day before heading to the marina or beach. It is also ideal for picking up a simple picnic or local produce to take home.
