Vieux-Lille lies north of Grand Place and retains a strong sense of the city’s Flemish and Burgundian history. Its narrow streets are lined with decorative brick façades, former merchants’ houses and elegant town mansions.

Rue de la Monnaie, Hospice Comtesse, the cathedral and the streets around Rue Esquermoise are natural stops. The district is also known for independent shops, cafés, restaurants and traditional estaminets.

The museum occupies an ornate 19th-century building. Its collections range from European masters and sculpture to ceramics and large historic relief maps.

Works associated with Rubens, Van Dyck, Goya, Delacroix and Rodin are among the highlights, while the building itself is an important part of the experience.

Allow plenty of time when art is a main interest. Temporary exhibitions and some galleries may affect access during the year.

The market fills the area around Place de la Nouvelle Aventure and the covered halls. Food, textiles, flowers, spices and goods from many culinary cultures come together here.

Sunday is especially busy and full of local life. Around the market are cafés, small restaurants and Maison Folie Wazemmes, giving the neighbourhood a strong cultural identity.

The foundation stone was laid in 1854, but financial and technical challenges caused repeated interruptions. The final façade was completed and inaugurated in 1999.

The façade filters daylight through pale stone and glass. Its rose window and bronze portal give the building a modern expression that contrasts with the lofty historicist interior.

The cathedral stands in the heart of the old town and is easily combined with Hospice Comtesse, Rue de la Monnaie and nearby restaurants.

The tower was built as part of the town hall during the first half of the 20th century, combining regional brick architecture with modern monumentality.

The visit leads through the tower to the panoramic level. In clear weather, the view stretches across the city and far into the surrounding landscape.
