L’Île-Rousse

Pale sandy beaches, a lively square and red rocks glowing at sunset – all in a relaxed coastal town at the heart of Balagne.

L’Île-Rousse lies on Corsica’s north-west coast, combining an easy-going small-town atmosphere with the sea just moments away. Place Paoli is its natural meeting point, shaded by old plane trees and surrounded by cafés and streets leading towards the market and seafront.

Several sandy beaches line A Marinella close to the centre. The promenade continues towards Pietra, where reddish porphyry rocks, the remains of a Genoese tower and the lighthouse open onto broad views of the Balagne coast.

Protected nature and cultural heritage

Pietra and the lighthouse

The red porphyry islets are the symbol of L’Île-Rousse and a natural destination for an evening walk.

The group is formed of several small islets linked to the town by a nineteenth-century bridge and breakwater. The rock changes colour with the light, and the views extend from Calvi to the Agriate and the villages of Balagne.

The site combines natural and cultural history, with Neolithic traces, the remains of a Genoese tower and a lighthouse dating from the second half of the nineteenth century. A largely traffic-free promenade leads to the viewpoints.

The lighthouse has a small interpretation room that may open during the summer season. Check the official website for current access.

Beach and town life

A Marinella and the town beaches

L’Île-Rousse has not one but three sandy beaches close to the centre.

The small beach by the railway station is close to the sailing club and watersports and is also popular with local residents. Continue along A Marinella to reach Napoleon beach and Caruchettu.

The promenade makes it easy to combine swimming with Place Paoli, shops and restaurants. The central beaches are particularly convenient when travelling without a car or simply stopping for a quick swim.

Swimming conditions, wind and lifeguard cover may vary. Follow local signs and advice.

The town’s meeting place

Place Paoli

The square is the heart of L’Île-Rousse and a natural place to begin exploring the town.

Place Paoli was laid out in the nineteenth century and is surrounded by old plane trees shading café terraces and the pétanque court. A fountain and bust of Pasquale Paoli stand at its centre.

Paoli founded the modern town around 1758 as a port and trading centre during the Corsican Revolution. The church, historic buildings and streets leading towards the market and sea surround the square.

The square remains the town’s outdoor living room, with everyday life, events and a gentle pace beyond the busiest periods.

Market and architecture

The covered market

The market hall, with its 21 columns, is one of the old town’s most distinctive buildings.

The hall stands close to Place Paoli and is a natural stop on a walk through the centre. Its open architecture provides a historic setting for the sale of local produce.

When producers are present, you can discover ingredients and flavours from Balagne and Corsica, including cheese, charcuterie, fruit, vegetables, honey and olive oil.

The stalls and level of activity vary through the year. Morning is often the best time to visit, but check local information when the market is your main reason for going.

Beaches in a natural setting

Bodri and Ghjunchitu

Two beautiful sandy beaches lie between L’Île-Rousse and Calvi, surrounded by maquis and small rocky coves.

Bodri and Ghjunchitu are known for pale, soft sand and turquoise water. The setting feels wilder than the town beaches, yet remains only a few kilometres from the centre.

The coastal train stops at Bodri, where a footpath leads down towards the beach. Ghjunchitu is a little farther away and requires a longer walk from the stop.

Wind can create excellent board-sports conditions but also more challenging swimming. Take particular care with children and follow local safety advice.

A train beside the sea

The U Trinichellu coastal train

The small train follows the coast between L’Île-Rousse and Calvi, serving as both transport and a scenic journey.

Along the Balagne section, the track runs close to the sea and stops at several beaches. Its unhurried pace is part of the experience, with fine views of bays, rocks and mountains.

The train makes it possible to visit Bodri, Algajola and Calvi without a car. It is also useful for combining a beach outing with dinner or a town walk elsewhere along the coast.

Services vary by season. Check current times before departure and leave some flexibility in your day.
