Corte

The citadel stands dramatically on a rocky outcrop above the old town and is the most powerful symbol of Corte’s place in Corsican history.

The fortified complex contains old barracks, former prison rooms and the distinctive “eagle’s nest” at the edge of the rock. From here, the view opens across the town and the mountains of inland Corsica.

The citadel is closely connected to Musée de la Corse. The historic site is therefore best explored together with the museum, which provides context for the island’s society, culture and political history.

Walk through the old town to the viewpoints around the fortress. The combination of stone houses, steep lanes and mountain scenery makes this the natural place to begin a stay in Corte.

Restonica is one of Corsica’s best-known mountain valleys, with a clear river cutting through forest, granite and high mountains just outside Corte.

The river rises at Lac de Melo and follows the valley for many kilometres before meeting the Tavignano. Along the way it forms natural pools, small rapids and calmer stretches that are popular on warm days.

The valley offers both short walks beside the water and demanding mountain hikes. Conditions can change quickly, and access, parking and any shuttle arrangements should always be checked locally.

Restonica is best experienced without rushing. An early start, sturdy footwear, water and respect for weather and wildfire conditions will make for a safer and more rewarding visit.

Musée de la Corse is a regional anthropology museum explaining how tradition, society and modernisation have shaped Corsica.

The museum opened in 1997 and occupies part of the citadel. Its collections explore everyday life, the economy, language, crafts, belief, music and the major changes that have shaped modern Corsica.

Objects, photographs, recordings, documents and changing themed exhibitions connect the island’s past with the present.

A visit is especially rewarding before travelling further around the island, as the museum provides context for the villages, food, music and strong local identity encountered along the way.

Upper Corte brings together old stone houses, steep lanes, historic squares and viewpoints beneath the citadel.

Corte is clearly divided between a historic upper town and a more commercial lower town around Cours Paoli. Narrow streets and stairways wind between the two towards the fortress.

The Belvédère at the foot of the citadel offers a broad view across the rooftops and the Restonica and Tavignano valleys. It is a natural stop on a leisurely walk through town.

Also include Place Gaffory, the church and the small lanes around the old town. This is where Corte’s former role as the capital of independent Corsica feels most apparent.

Melo and Capitello are two of Corsica’s best-known mountain lakes, set high in the upper Restonica Valley.

Lac de Melo lies at an altitude of 1,711 metres and is of glacial origin. The Restonica River rises here before flowing down towards Corte.

Lac de Capitello lies higher and is reached by a more demanding continuation beyond Melo. The terrain can be steep, exposed and highly weather-dependent, so the walk is not suitable for everyone.

Access to the trailhead and transport arrangements in Restonica can change. Always check local advice, weather, wildfire risk and the current access arrangements before setting out.

The Tavignano Valley begins almost in the centre of Corte and follows an old mule track into wild scenery of river, mountainsides and natural bathing places.

The valley is reached on foot from the area around the citadel. The trail forms part of the Mare a Mare Nord and continues inland through country with no road access.

Many walkers choose a shorter outing to the footbridge at Rossulinu, while experienced hikers can continue towards Refuge de la Sega. Longer routes require time, equipment and careful planning.

This is an excellent alternative to Restonica for travellers who want to begin walking directly from town and experience a quieter, more continuous mountain valley.

The train journey to Corte is more than transport – it is a leisurely passage through Corsica’s mountains, forests, tunnels and viaducts.

Chemins de Fer de la Corse links Corte with Bastia and Ajaccio, among other places. The narrow-gauge line climbs from the coast into scenery that becomes increasingly wild as the train approaches the island’s interior.

Across inland Corsica, the train passes steep valley sides, forest and historic bridges. The journey reveals views that are harder to appreciate by car, while the slower pace gives you time to absorb the landscape.

In spring, the vegetation is particularly lush and the route is sometimes known as the “flower train”. Corte works equally well as a day trip or as a stop on a longer rail journey between the coastal towns.
