Bastia with the old harbour, citadel and Corsican city atmosphere
France travel guide

Bastia

Bastia is often the first encounter many travellers have with Corsica – an atmospheric harbour city where history, coastal life and genuine Corsican character come together.

Bastia lies on Corsica’s north-eastern coast and offers a beautiful combination of history, coastal life and authentic Corsican atmosphere. For many travellers, the city becomes not only the gateway to Corsica, but also one of the most memorable stops on the journey.

Around the old harbour, Vieux Port, pastel-coloured houses stand close together beside small fishing boats and sailing vessels. Here you can begin the day with coffee at an outdoor café and end the evening with fresh seafood and local wines as the sun sets over the harbour. Above the city rises the impressive Baroque church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste – one of Bastia’s most iconic landmarks.

On the heights above the harbour you will find the Terra Nova citadel, built by the Genoese in the 14th century. Narrow cobbled streets, small squares and historic buildings give the area a special calm.

Cap Corse in Corsica
Nature, villages and coastal road

Cap Corse – Corsica’s wild peninsula

The narrow peninsula stretching north from Bastia is considered one of the most beautiful and authentic regions of Corsica. Here you find dramatic cliffs, small fishing villages, historic watchtowers and spectacular views across the Mediterranean. A drive around Cap Corse is one of the island’s most memorable experiences.

The coastal road winds past vineyards, old harbours and picturesque villages such as Nonza, known for its dramatic position high above the sea. The region is also known for its calm atmosphere and authentic Corsican culture, with small wineries, local markets and fresh seafood in the harbour villages along the coast.

Cap Corse is therefore a perfect destination if you want to experience a more traditional and scenic side of Corsica, away from the busiest tourist areas.

The train journey to Corte in Corsica
Train journey and nature experience

The train journey to Corte

The train journey to Corte is one of the most spectacular ways to experience Corsica’s dramatic nature. The narrow-gauge railway, operated by Chemins de Fer de la Corse, winds from the coast deep into the island’s mountain landscape – through tunnels, over viaducts and along steep valley sides.

Many also call it the “flower train”, because in spring the route passes through areas full of flowering plants, shrubs and green mountainsides. Travelling from Bastia or Ajaccio, the landscape becomes wilder the closer you get to Corte. For many, the highlight is the stretch via the Vizzavona pass, where the view opens towards dense forests, deep gorges and high mountains.

This is not just transport – it is a nature experience in itself. The train gives you views you cannot get from the road, and the pace lets you truly take in the landscape. The journey is perfect whether you want a day trip to Corte or to combine mountain scenery with a coastal holiday.
