Seasonal guide to France
France in May
May is one of the most pleasant months in France: long days, green landscapes, major cultural events and a feeling of summer without the heaviest high-season crowds.
This is the month for Paris and Roland-Garros, Cannes and its film festival, Lyon and electronic music, museums after dark and nature experiences across the whole country.
May has several French public holidays and long weekends. That can mean extra traffic, but also more life in towns and villages. Plan hotels and trains a little earlier than you would in April.
France in May suits almost every kind of trip: city breaks, wine regions, coast, villages, culture and active days. Temperatures are often more stable than in April, but it is still wise to pack for changeable weather.
The Côte d’Azur and Provence are approaching the summer season, Paris is full of events, and wine regions such as the Loire, Champagne, Alsace and Burgundy are green and attractive without the July crowds.

Where should you go?
France is a big country, and the right destination depends on the weather, opening hours, your interests and how much you want to move around. These suggestions are particularly well suited to this period.
Film and the Riviera
Cannes
May is Cannes at its most international. The film festival makes the town more expensive, but also unique if you want to feel the glamour and Riviera atmosphere.
City and tennis
Paris
Roland-Garros, museums, parks and long evenings make Paris very strong in May. It is a month for both first visits and return trips.
Food and music
Lyon
May is a good time for Lyon: food, riverbanks, the old town and festivals before the summer heat.
Villages and markets
Provence
Markets, villages and mild evenings make Provence a pleasure. A good choice for a driving holiday before the high season.
Wine and villages
Alsace
Wine routes, villages and Strasbourg are a fine choice when the landscape is green. May is a quieter period than the Christmas market season.
How to plan France in May
- Check French public holidays before you book. Several long weekends can mean higher prices and full trains.
- Choose a central hotel if you are travelling to festival cities such as Cannes, Lyon or Paris – getting around is easier when events fill the city.
- May is good for combination trips: Paris + the Loire, Lyon + Beaujolais/Burgundy, or Nice + Cannes + Antibes.

Frequently asked questions
Is May a good month for the South of France?
Yes. May often brings pleasant temperatures, more restaurants open and fewer crowds than July and August.
Can you swim in France in May?
Some people swim on the Riviera and in Corsica, but the sea is still cool. May is better suited to cities, nature and coastal atmosphere than a pure beach holiday.
Should you avoid Cannes during the film festival?
Not necessarily, but hotel prices can be high. If you simply want a Riviera holiday, Antibes, Nice or Saint-Raphaël may be easier bases.
