Annecy with the old town, canals and the lake surrounded by the Alps
France Guide

Annecy

Annecy is the Venice of the Alps – a destination where crystal-clear lake water, canals, the old town and alpine panoramas come together in one of France's most beautiful urban experiences.

On the shores of the crystal-clear Lac d’Annecy, surrounded by dramatic Alpine peaks, lies the charming town of Annecy. It is considered one of the most beautiful towns in France and is known for its romantic canals, pastel-coloured houses and idyllic old town.

Annecy is located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, only about 40 kilometres from Geneva in Switzerland, which makes it a popular destination for both French and international visitors. With its unique blend of history, spectacular scenery and rich cultural life, the town is just as well suited to romantic weekend breaks as it is to longer holidays filled with activities and experiences.

Annecy combines history, lakeside life, alpine atmosphere and easy access to mountain hikes, cycling routes and day trips – all gathered in a town that feels both refined, lively and relaxing.

The history of Annecy

Annecy’s history goes back more than two thousand years. A small settlement already existed here in Roman times, but the town did not truly begin to flourish until the Middle Ages.

In the 12th century, Annecy became an important administrative and religious centre in the region. The Counts of Savoy established their power base here, and the town developed into a strategic trading point between Italy, Switzerland and France.

One of the most significant periods in the town’s history came in the 16th century, when Annecy became a religious centre during the Catholic Counter-Reformation. The renowned bishop Francis de Sales played a central role in strengthening Catholicism in the region, and his legacy is still visible in several churches and monuments in the town.

Annecy became part of France in 1860, when the Savoy region was annexed by the country following a referendum. Since then, the town has developed from a small trading centre into a popular travel destination known for its unique beauty and high quality of life.

The old town – Vieille Ville

Annecy’s historic old town is the town’s biggest attraction. Narrow cobbled streets, small bridges and canals running through the centre create a truly special atmosphere.

The area is often called the “Venice of the Alps” because the water flows through the streets in a way that recalls the famous Italian city. Along the canals you will find small shops, bakeries, restaurants and cafés where you can wander through narrow lanes, buy local delicacies or sit down on a terrace and enjoy the view.

One of the town’s most iconic landmarks is Palais de l’Isle, a small medieval building set on an island in the middle of the canal. It was originally built in the 12th century and has served as a prison, courthouse and administrative building. Today it functions as a museum and is one of the most photographed sights in France.

Rising high above the old town is Château d’Annecy, the impressive medieval castle that was once the residence of the Counts of Geneva. From here you enjoy beautiful views over the town, the lake and the surrounding mountains.

Lac d’Annecy – a natural gem

Lake Lac d’Annecy is the very heart of the region and is considered one of the cleanest lakes in Europe. Its clear turquoise colour is due both to pure mountain springs and to strict environmental measures introduced as early as the 1960s.

The lake stretches for around 14 kilometres and is surrounded by small villages, beaches and beautiful viewpoints. Popular activities include boat trips, kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing, water-skiing, swimming and cycling around the lake. The famous cycle path along the lake is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe.

Among the most atmospheric places around the water are Talloires, Menthon-Saint-Bernard and the romantic Pont des Amours, which offers a classic view over the water and the mountains.

Tip: Plan your visit so that you combine at least one day in the old town with one day around the lake and one day in the mountains. That way you get the urban atmosphere, the viewpoints and the alpine feeling that make Annecy so special.

Mountains, food and excursions from Annecy

The mountains around Annecy make the area a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Just a short drive from town you will find fantastic hiking trails, viewpoints and ski resorts. One of the most popular viewpoints is Semnoz, a mountain area south of the town with panoramic views over the lake and the Alps.

Annecy is also one of Europe’s best places for paragliding, where you can soar above the lake and enjoy a spectacular view of the region. In winter, several ski resorts are only a short drive away, while summer brings swimming, cycling and mountain hikes ranging from easy to demanding.

Culinarily, Annecy lies in the heart of Savoy, a region known for hearty mountain dishes and excellent cheeses. Here you should try fondue savoyarde, raclette, tartiflette and local cheeses such as Reblochon, Tomme de Savoie and Beaufort.

The town’s location also makes it an ideal base for day trips to Chamonix at the foot of Mont Blanc, Geneva in Switzerland, Lyon and the mountain village of La Clusaz.
